What a dryer vent inspection actually looks at

Three cycles for one load of towels. A hot, damp laundry room. A faint burning-lint smell when the dryer runs. Those are airflow symptoms, not appliance failure. An inspection separates the two before anyone sells you a dryer.

The run gets traced end to end. We pull the dryer out and look at the transition hose first. Crushed foil behind a pushed-back dryer in a tight basement corner is the most common single fault here. Then joints: foil tape or screws, and which way the crimps point. Then the termination. Side-wall exits on pre-1940 stone and stucco homes sit low, and mulch, snow or a boxwood will smother them. Roof caps on second-floor and renovated laundries get checked for a missing damper and for nesting.

Airflow gets verified at the cap with the dryer running, not guessed at from the inside. Elbows are counted, because each one shortens the usable run.

Two findings change everything. One is a duct tied into an unlined masonry chase or old chimney flue, common in older twins and rowhomes. The other is a termination dumping into a garage or crawlspace. Both are re-route conversations, not cleaning conversations, and we say so on site.
